Welcome to the NEW organics (food scraps) drop-off program!

 

These smart bins have been located in your town to provide more options for dropping off food scraps.  The purpose is to create easy and convenient opportunities for residents to participate in reducing their waste, by removing food scraps.

 

These satellite containers are available to deposit food scraps (ONLY) at your convenience 24/7.

It’s simple to participate in three easy steps.
1.) Sign-up for your towns food scraps program (if you haven’t already).
2.) Download the “MetroKEY” app.
3.) Bring your food scraps to the bin.  (just food scraps are accepted in the bins)

How to access and use the food scraps smart bins

SIGN-UP FOR THE PROGRAM

If you are already signed up for your town’s food scraps program, move to Step 2.
If you have not signed up, click on your town below.

Note: if your town is not listed, the smart bins are not active yet.

1.)  Install the MetroKEY App

2.)  Create a New Account * allow notifications *

3.) Once you’ve been verified you have signed up for your town’s organics program your account will be activated. Activation can take up to 48 hours.

 

NOTE: The following towns require a transfer station permit to gain access to the app.

COLLECT YOUR SCRAPS

You can fill a compostable bag provided by the town or just drop off food scraps loose.

IMPORTANT!  We are making compost from your scraps. Only put items that are listed as acceptable items.

We do not accept ANY plastic, stickers, rubber bands, twist ties etc.

 

NOTE: You will lose access to the program if you do not honor the acceptable list.

DROP OFF YOUR SCRAPS

1.)   When you arrive at the bin,
OPEN the MetroKEY App.
Select the bin you are currently located at.

2.)   Then choose:
UNLOCK BIN or REPORT A PROBLEM.

3.)   SUBMIT that you agree to only put acceptable items in the bin.

4.)   STEP ON PEDAL to open lid. (There may be a short delay before latch unlocks)
You will have 25 seconds to open the bin.

What Can I Put in the Bin?

REMEMBER – ONLY FOOD Scraps are allowed in your bag.

No PLASTIC items, stickers, rubber bands or twist ties!
No COMPOSTABLES (plates, bowls, cups, utensils, etc.)

  • Dairy Products
  • Unpainted pumpkins, gourds
  • Houseplants & Flower Bouquets
  • Fruits & Nuts (including pits)
  • Vegetables ***Remove stickers, bands and twist ties***
  • Bread, Pasta & Grains
  • Sauces, Soup & Gravy
  • Coffee Grounds & Filters
  • Tea Bags
  • Paper Towels & Napkins
  • Egg Shells
  • Plate Scrapings

REMEMBER PLEASE
NO COMPOSTABLE PRODUCTS

This includes compostable plates, utensils, cups, bowls, etc.

What kind of smart phone can I use?

The MetroKEY app is downloadable from Google Play Store and Apple App store. There is no charge for the app. Currently these are the only platforms we support.
